FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH" -Big Brother 1984 (104 Orwell)
In many ways, the attributes that make up the society of 1984 is mirrored on to Elgen Academy and its people. The citizens in the society of 1984 are blinded by the Big Brother, or the Government as they are made to believe in falsified information. They are manipulated to believing the wrongs are right and rights are wrong just as the glows are manipulated in the academy into believing they are contributing for the good of the world. The role of Big Brother can be reflected on to Dr. Hatch who is responsible for brainwashing the glows into a world of lies they are living in.
"Hatch set down the phone. He loved it when a plan came together. And everything was going according to plan." (Evans 202)
(Despite efforts to control and dictate the minds of everyone, it simply isn't possible. In George Orwell's 1984 the main character, Winston all the sudden grows suspicious of his surroundings and begins to ask questions about the society and its defiance of morals. In Richard Evan's Michael Vey, the abandoned and disobedient glows that are locked up in the cells on the D floor had realized Dr. Hatchet's true intentions of taking advantage and putting themselves above the "average human". The glows in floor D and Winston both snapped back into reality and came to the realization that they had been under their respective leader's manipulations into believing in going against morals.
However, with the Big Brother and Dr. Hatchet having the clear advantage in terms of power over their respective environment, those who create a flaw in the leader's idea of a perfect society or vision are punished. The rebellious glows along with Michael are all placed in the D floor prison cells where they would be left with no freedom or power for potentially years to come and some such as Michael receive crueler punishments of being sent to Prison Cell 25. I won't get into the details of Cell 25 as they would be too big of a spoiler, but I will say that Cell 25 in the novel Michael Vey serves a similar purpose as Room 101 in 1984. Both Cell 25 and room 101 attempts to break the rebellion's mind and heart in order to manipulate their mindsets back to how the respective leader with power desires. Winston in 1984 is not able to hold on to his humanity as he is broken and forced to believe that War is peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is strength. Michael may or may not have the same fate as Winston but I will leave his fate out of this post to create the suspense and cause you to read the book yourself.
